MGM National Harbor has debuted a $48 million second-level casino space. The 38,000-square-foot second-level casino introduces an expanded poker room, off-track horse betting, approximately 285 slot machines, a new bar and a new dining venue, the resort announced Monday.

“It’s a great result when positive customer demand drives a business to expand its offerings,” said Melonie Johnson, president and chief operating officer of MGM National Harbor. “This year, we have set new casino revenue marks. Expanding our gaming offerings will help us meet the desire of our customers for more luxury gaming entertainment space while welcoming new players to the resort as well. Most importantly, we are providing 250 additional jobs and additional tax revenues to Prince George’s County and the State of Maryland.”

MGM National Harbor’s newly completed space includes:

  • Poker Room – The MGM National Harbor Poker Room has been relocated to the second level, increasing it by seven tables to a total of 46, with seating for 460 players. The space also features a two-table high-limit poker room.
  • The Race Book – The second level offers a 24-screen off-track betting lounge created in partnership with The Maryland Jockey Club, founded in Annapolis in 1743.
  • Snacks – A fast-casual dining venue, serves a menu of resort favorites from Asian-inspired bowls to pizza, wings and more.
  • Terrace – From the 700-square-foot overlook, visitors can enjoy views of National Harbor, the Maryland countryside and Virginia shores. It also serves as a public smoking area.

MGM estimates the addition will add to state and county coffers; last year, the resort contributed more than $170 million to the state's Education Trust Fund.

The second-level gaming floor is open 24 hours daily and can be accessed via the guest elevators near the Self-Park garage at the west end of the property, or by the escalator located on the casino floor.

National Harbor Welcomes MGM National Harbor
Casino enhances National Harbor’s portfolio of offerings, brings employment and economic growth to Washington, D.C region

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md., Dec. 8, 2016—When Milt Peterson, principal and chairman of Peterson Companies, first laid eyes on the 350-acre National Harbor site he recognized its potential. Since that time, a micro-city has risen on the site with features including seven hotels, more than 160 retail shops and more than 40 restaurants. The property is also perfect for meetings and conventions with more than 3,300 hotel rooms and more than half-a-million square feet of meeting space. Upon completion, the property will also have one-million square feet of class “A” office space; one-million square feet of retail, dining and entertainment space and 2500 residences including townhomes, manor homes, condominiums and apartments. Currently, there are 1500 residents at National Harbor. Now, National Harbor is proud to welcome the addition of MGM National Harbor.

“MGM National Harbor will be transformational for the region,” said Jon Peterson, principal with Peterson Companies, the developer of National Harbor. “Not only does MGM National bring new employment opportunities (almost 4,000 jobs) and tax revenue, including millions of dollars for education, the venue will also have positive impact on other businesses surrounding National Harbor.”

Peterson and National Harbor have worked closely with other stakeholders in implementing more than $10 million in road improvements in the region and will continue to make improvements. “With the addition of MGM National Harbor, the property becomes one of the largest examples of public/private partnership in the Mid-Atlantic,” Peterson explained. MGM is a catalyst for economic development in the area and existing hotels and restaurants are investing millions of dollars in improvements such as Gaylord National’s new 24,000 square foot ballroom on the Potomac (in addition to their already 50,000 sq. ft. ballroom.)

To date, National Harbor is about 50 percent complete. Upon completion, National Harbor will hold more than 7.3 million square feet of master planned mixed-use community. “There is more to come,” said Peterson. “National Harbor is on chapter six of a 12 chapter book.”

MGM National Harbor not only brings a significant casino but also signature restaurants, retail, hotel and meeting space, and a theater for top entertainment—all in a very high-end environment. “While we are excited about all this new world-class venue has to offer, we are also energized by what this means for the county, region and visitors from around the world,” added Peterson.

National Harbor has grown considerably over the past eight years, since Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center first opened. It was later followed by the opening of Tanger Outlets as well as additional downtown shopping, restaurants, residential and office buildings.

“There are few places in the world that have been able to effectively plan and build out a community of this magnitude, in this amount of time and with such unique tenants—all on one of the most valuable pieces of waterfront in the Washington, D.C. region.” Peterson added.

Because National Harbor hosts more than 12 million visitors annually, it recently launched its own convention and visitors association—Visit National Harbor. MGM National Harbor, Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center and Tanger Outlets are the primary partners in the association.
