The 1000 Islands Charity Poker Run Board of Directors has decided to move forward with this year's event scheduled for the weekend of July 17th in Clayton, NY. This decision was not made lightly as we are very concerned about the health and safety of our fellow boaters, volunteers, spectators and the benefactors of this great event. Fun time in Clayton. Amazing how fast the boats move. Next year, I want to video tape while riding in one of these boats. President – 1000 Islands Charity Poker Run. VP and Owner at OVIA Insurance Agencies. The high-water woes that has plagued a large portion of the country has reached upstate New York and has threatened the overall success of the 1000 Islands Charity Poker Run, leaving most of the village docks at the scheduled lunch stop in Alexandria Bay, NY underwater and essentially unusable.

With the third installment of their highly successful Poker Run just days away, organizer Nolan Ferris and his team behind the Clayton, NY event decided not to let the high-water issues sink it for their attendees. But rather hunker down and roll up their sleeves. Literally.

“We purchased the materials ourselves and had a group of volunteers, including contractor Lance Peterson from Clayton (New York) that brought his whole (JR Construction) crew, and a friend of mine (Bruce) from New Jersey who’s a contractor and a friend of mine (Brian) from Pennsylvania who’s a contractor–drove up this morning to help us put this together today,” said Ferris. “We had a crew of 16 people and we nailed it out in about eight hours–600 feet of dock, three feet wide.”

After dealing with the town of Alexandria Bay for over a month regarding this issue, Ferris decided last week that it had to be done and to handle it themselves, mainly for the participants who will be traveling great lengths to experience this event–many for the first time.

The Poker Run, which is a 160-mile run out and back across the St. Lawrence River highlighted by picturesque castles and scenery, benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central New York and River Hospital, which provides Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) treatment to America’s heroes–past and present.

After the docks were installed and complete, the group received a generous $1000 donation from Carnegie Bay Marina in Alexandria Bay for their efforts. The fasteners were provided at cost from Garlock Lumber, also in “Alex Bay.”

In only their third year of running this event, it’s clear that the team truly cares about it and its success. They are excited that so many new people will be coming to the small town of Clayton for some big fun and promises a charity presentation not to be soon forgotten.

1000 Islands Charity Poker Run Accident Report

If the morning portion of yesterday’s 1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run in Clayton, N.Y., was a relatively low-speed 60-mile tour—30 miles in each direction—of the St. Lawrence River, the 100-mile after-lunch portion—an extended version of the same course—gave participants with a need for higher speed a chance to pursue it. And that’s exactly what roughly half of the 118-boat fleet did, with the remaining owners of the high-performance catamarans, V-bottom sportboats and center consoles and their guests opting to either sit it out and enjoy the lovely 1,000 Islands Harbor Hotel or explore the area via water on their own.

Thanks to Randy Scism, Cherell Scism and the rest the Marine Technology Inc., crew, our group on their show-stopping MTI-V 42 center console opted to join the spectator fleet off famed Singer Castle so we could capture still images and video. And the boats in the fleet, particularly a loose formation of Wright Performance 360 sport catamarans, put on a fun show.

In short, like so many of the participants in the second-year event, we took it easy in the afternoon and enjoyed the company on board and our surroundings, which could be the best—arguably for sure—of any poker run in the country.

With rain in the forecast for the area, most participants opted to pull their boats from the water before dinner, which far from the typically inedible fare at poker runs included multiple food stations, from prime rib to make-your-own-tacos to a clam bake. But the high point of the evening—and maybe even the day—was the live auction, which was preceded with a moving video from the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central New York and ended with a live auction that saw a Mercury Racing-donated cooler fetch an even cooler $10,000 and change for River Community Wellness Program at River Hospital.
